Security in the Mission Area:
Providing the Humanitarian Space
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
August 22 - 26, 2005
This seminar, entitled "Security in the Mission Area - Providing the Humanitarian Space", will examine the major issues associated with military peacekeepers and their civilian partners working together during peacekeeping missions. Today's complex world requires peacekeepers and civilians to establish a high level of cooperation and coordination in order to effectively deal with insurgency and terrorist operations while creating and preserving a secure environment for humanitarian work.
The seminar is jointly hosted by COE, the Malaysia Ministry of Defense, and the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (UNDPKO). Participants include members of the militaries of more than 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as more than twenty participants representing the Malaysian military, government, academic institutions, and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The seminar includes role-playing in a fictional but realistic scenario, enabling the participants to explore challenges and work together to develop solutions. Subject matter experts representing humanitarian organizations, the United Nations, NGOs, international organizations, and military and government entities will provide diverse perspectives on the topic.
