Derick
Peace Operations Advisor
Lt Col (Ret) Derick graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, UK in 1976. He was commissioned into the Royal Malaysian Rangers and served in three Ranger Battalions. He was directly involved in Counter Insurgency Operations at various levels of command from 1976 to 1985. In 1986, he was assigned to the Selangor State Security Committee, Malaysia where he was actively involved in formulating civil-military activities in support of military operations for counter insurgency operations. In 1998 he was assigned as an instructor to the Royal Military College (RMC) where he was largely responsible for training and administering graduate programs for the army. In 1993, he commanded the 8th Ranger Battalion (Airborne). From 1996 to 1999, as the Founder and First Commandant of the Malaysian Peacekeeping Centre he was responsible for the development of its peace operations support training programmes and activities for the Malaysian Armed Forces.
In his UN service, Lt Col Derick had sixteen months exposure in UN operations under UNIMIC/UNTAC in Cambodia, from February 1992 to June 1993. As the Deputy Sector Commander and Team leader he successfully planned and conducted an election in one of the provinces, due to the absence of International Electoral staff.. In February 1999 he was posted to UN Headquarters in New York as Head of the Training Cell in Training and Evaluation Services, Department of Peacekeeping Operations. He has advised various UN Member States on UN PKO training initiatives.
In performing his duties as the Commandant of the MPTC and later as Head of the Training Cell in the Training and Evaluation Service, DPKO, he had planned, programmed, conducted and attended several courses, seminars, workshops all over the world, including: International Peacekeeping Operations in New Castle Australia in 1996 and 1997, International Humanitarian Law, Bangkok in 1997, Negotiations and Hostage Taking, in Kuala Lumpur 1997, and the International Military Operations and Law Conference in Victoria, British Colombia, Canada. He is guest lecturer at several institutions and international seminars. He served as Course Director to several United Nations Train-the-Trainers courses in ILO Training Centre in Turin, Italy, and planned and organized several United Nations Training Assistance Team (UNTAT) courses around the world.
Lt Col Derick participated as coordinator and leader of the United Nations Training Assistance Team in several Multinational Peace Support Operations field exercises, workshops and seminars conducted by United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) conducted in Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, Working with the Integrated Training Service in UN Department Of Peacekeeping Operations Lt Col Derick have assisted ITS in developing Standardized Training Modules Level 2 and Level 3 for distribution to all UN Member states. Lt Col Derick is currently a Peace Operations Advisor to the Center of Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.
