Discussion in past events suggest that the Asia Pacific Region may be able to provide a unique model, techniques or strategies in peace making and peace building that could be articulated and shared with nations from other regions. How do you feel about that idea?

Agree: 8 or 50%

Strongly agree: 7 or 44%

Not sure: 1 or 6%

Disagree: 0

Strongly disagree: 0

Comments:

  • Most of the Asia Pacific countries have past experiences in war. They all have a lot of strategies to adopt in order to achieve peace. They also know the value of peace. Therefore they should do the maximum possible effort to uplift the standards.

  • The region has been through traumatic experiences and is now enjoying stability compared, to other regions. Also, important is the region's feel for peoples identification and their culture(s).

  • That is an ideal. It is feasible, and depends upon the will of each country.

  • Members are exposed in the UN mission. Comparative experiences could be shared and produce better solutions for future UN commitments.

  • They have already proved it by participating in various peacekeeping missions, the latest being East Timor.

  • Sustainable peace and development are vital to a UN PKO mission. Some nations in the Asia Pacific brought to the UNPKO mission their lessons learned in dealing with insurgencies/poverty in their nations, in the sense of sustainable peace and development accomplishment. The other side of the coin, the European and other regions may focus only on stopping/stabilizing the situation which in any future point of time, fighting/conflict could be back due to lack of sustainable peace/development in targeted country.

  • Strongly agree, there being differences in languages, landscapes, and cultures and governing systems.

  • Definitely, it will give a very positive result in understanding. These will bring all under the same platform of various issues of peace operations.

  • Discussion on peacemaking and peace building helps people understand more clearly about these things through experience and new ideas.

  • Provides a unique model for Asia Pacific conflict management, similar to initiatives for the African continent.

  • Perhaps it is for this reason that much has been accomplished in terms of MNF and UN Missions.

Regional Peace Operations Training Centers can provide a level of synergy by providing benefits not available within a National Training Center. Please rate the importance of the following for a Regional Center. Please indicate by numbering in order of priority – more than 1 item may be given the same priority.

16 Responses. Listed by priority chosen.

  1. Sponsorship by the United Nations

  2. Certification by the United Nations (tie)

  3. Exchange of Instructors (tie)

  4. Regional Political Support

  5. Exchange of Students

  6. Common Programs

Comments:

For common programs, each centre can specialize in a different subject.

Additional Comments. Please add any comments you feel might improve programs in the future.

  • It is suggested that notes pertaining to the subject matter be given in advance if possible, so that freshmen can understand what the experts are talking about.

  • The unique model and approach to making or building peace in the world is welcome. The UN has already been initiating it for many years. It will be more successful with improvement of the other countries, because it may reinforce the relationship between many countries, and their understanding. It may also facilitate the establishment of peace around the world.

  • In every seminar conducted, there must be a mixture of civilian and military participants. Avoid seminars purely for civilians or military, as the UN focus is on coordination of all agencies. They must be invited. Civilians must know our (military) way of doing things and vice versa. Understanding values perhaps could determine success before any mission. For this seminar, involvement of professors indicates the seriousness in Korea in supporting the efforts toward world peace. Congratulations and thank you to the organizers – KNDU and COE.

  • Better financial aid in accordance to countries where the seminar is being hosted.

  • Additional participation of civilian police, key NGOs/IOs, ICRC, etc. to contribute to the seminar group discussion.

  • US PACOM should educate US officers (flag and staff levels) about UNPKO more than this. The level of understanding of UNPKO of US Officers is not sufficient/acceptable. Chapter 6 or even Chapter 7, UN Command and Control.

  • NGO should not be the main facilitator for military PKO discussion due to the level of understanding military missions. They tend to guide and focus the discussion to humanitarian assistance other than the phasing of UN force activities developing along the timed mission.

  • Distribution of read ahead material (Seminar UN documents) should be done prior to the actual seminar

  • It would be more beneficial if instructors of peace operations training centres can attend these seminars and seminar games. Besides, to have standardization amongst different training centres at the national level and training materials and training packages should be the same. There may be more numbers of seminar games arranged regionally. Training staff of DPKO should also visit different training institutes to bring parity in standards of training. If required, a separate fund may be allotted to different nations to encourage better and effective training in peace operations training centres.

  • Seminars on PKOs should be held more so that knowledge of these operations will help people in carrying out the work

  • Involve more nations to provide expert lecturers and instructors, so that nations can have a better sense of ownership for the programs.

  • Currently it is well organized.
